The Swartvlei is the largest and deepest lake in the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park. It is an estuarine lake system and is connected to the Indian Ocean at certain times of the year. The three tributaries that feed the lake are the Wolwe, Karatara and Hoogekraal rivers. Take a stroll from our front door and experience the serenity of the Swartvlei, meet a local pooch taking a dip or watch as the full moon reflects off its mirror like surface

The Goliath Heron is the world’s largest living heron and is a solitary forager, feeding primarily on fish and frogs, small mammals and reptiles. The Goliath Heron is found throughout South Africa and is one of 158 bird species that make The Island their home. Look up in the tree and you may just spot the Heron nesting or look out for it when strolling along the water’s edge.

The Seahorse Suite is our tribute to the Knysna Seahorse found in only three lagoons, including the Swartvlei Lagoon. This suite with its garden and pool view offers a spacious room, a kingsize bed or twin (your preference), a private courtyard, a separate ensuite bathroom with a gorgeous bath, a walk in shower, basin and toilet. Includes DSTV and Netflix, a bar fridge, microwave, and toaster. Wifi available throughout the property.

The Knysna Seahorse is only found in three estuaries of the Garden Route: the Swartvlei, the Knysna Lagoon, and Keurbooms River in Plettenberg Bay. The Knysna Seahorse can be up to 12 centimetres in length and its colour varies from pale green to brown. Take a paddle or use one of our stand-up paddleboards on the Swartvlei lagoon and you may just get lucky and spot this unique little character.

The self catering Strelitzia Suite is perfect for couples or young families. A king size bed or twin bed made to your preference, and sleeper couch for the young one divided by a curtain. The private bathroom includes a shower. The fully equipped kitchen and outside gas barbecue allows you to prepare your own meals at your own leisure. The desk and complimentary wifi keeps you connected, while you disconnect. Your smart TV includes DSTV and Netflix.

There are five indigenous species of strelitzia in South Africa, also known as the Crane Flower or Bird of Paradise. Two are located at In Toto the imposing arborescent banana-like Strelitzia Alba with its striking white flowers and the Strelitzia Regina with its striking orange colours.

The Yellowwood tree (Podocarpus Falcatus) is South Africa’s national tree and synonymous with the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Forests. Form a friendship circle or hug the Woodville Big Tree located a mere 26 minutes from In Toto north of Hoekwil. It is 800 years old, 33 meters high, has crown that is 34m wide, and a circumference of 12 meters.

The Outeniqua Mountain Range is an imposing backdrop to a large section of the Garden Route. The name is believed to originate from a Khoikhoi tribe that once lived in the mountains and means ‘they who bear honey’. Outeniqua is one of a number of indigenous local geographical names, examples of others are Goukamma, Karatara and Tsitsikamma. Enjoy one of the many hiking or biking trails that traverse the famous natural landmarks.
